Founded in 2007 in a Tunisian art scene bereft of art centers and venues dedicated to artistic exploration and research, La Boîte sees itself as a research and experimentation laboratory for artists and architects, supporting the creation, production, dissemination and mediation of their work in Tunisia.
La Boîte acts wherever its audiences are, in their places of work or study.
It works in companies (La Boîte-La Charguia), at universities (Chapelle Sainte-Monique de l’IHEC Carthage) and in the regions, in Djerba in partnership with l’espace culturel l’Agora Djerba, and in Gabès in partnership with ISAM Gabès and the Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires (La Boîte Hors-Tunis).
From the outset, La Boîte has been dedicated to the production of daring artistic projects, using mediums that are little-known or little-valued by the public, such as architecture, installations, performances and video art, which it has helped to make more visible and promote as part of the Gabès Cinéma Fen festival, a festival dedicated to the moving image, in which it has founded a section dedicated to video art in 2019.
As a member of the Agoras régions network, a network of local cultural spaces set to develop in Tunisia’s 24 governorates, the company is working to create a territorial network that will enable its exhibitions to be shown outside its own walls and outside the capital.
